The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Origins
Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company produced goods to meet demand for modern and contemporary urban housing. It had the first tunnel kiln in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.
In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began to expand outwards to take advantage of sales and new markets. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other manufacturers' products in order to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares as well as plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the firm’s global market share.
In the 1990s Toto began to focus on research and development for water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company embraced a just-in time method of managing supply chains, and it used the same methodology for its sales process. This led to a higher level customer satisfaction.
Toto has continued to innovate with regard to toilet technology. Its latest toilet, for example it has a strong tornado flush that is more eco friendly than traditional toilets. The company makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and also has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs and hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than standard models.
The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It features exhibits on Toto’s seminal products, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made of ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing, and products such as bath units. In another gallery, visitors will find Toto products sold all over. The museum also includes a bathroom with the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.
Before the formation of Toto the members of the group performed session work for many musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather, drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
With a name like Asia you'd expect the group to be prog queens and kings but they're actually a fairly simple rock group. The band was initially four-piece, and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a massive blockbuster, but not without issues. Record companies placed the band on the place with the directive "give us a hit record or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on them to give it. Toto was able to do this through the aid of the hit song "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience. Before forming the group, the band members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard of 1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.
The album begins hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. The album also includes some slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and could sound like a complete flop, but works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV The band's fortunes took a turn for the worse. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. However, the group was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then and Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain the single track "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
